Make-It, Take-It Workshops Offered at the Botanical Gardens this Fall

Andy Grinsfelder

Buffalo, NY - The Buffalo and Erie County Botanical Gardens offers a wide variety of programs and workshops throughout the year. Make-It, Take-It Workshops are extremely popular and some classic favorites are on the Botanical Gardens’ schedule for this fall. A Tropical Glass Terrarium Workshop will be offered on October 11, a Hypertufa Container Workshop on October 20, and two Fresh Thanksgiving Arrangement Workshops will take place November 19 and 20.

First of the fall workshops, the Tropical Glass Terrarium Workshop, will be held on October 11 from 6-8pm. Participants will each build a terrarium from tropical cuttings from the Botanical Gardens’ collection.  This workshop is a great friend get-together and a fun night out.  Organizers ask that participants bring gloves and a box for transporting your creation.  The cost for this workshop is $20 for the general public and $15 for Botanical Gardens’ members.

The Hypertufa Container Workshop will be held on October 20 from 6-8pm. Hypertufas are very popular and are lots of fun to make. They are planters made from aggregates bonded together using Portland cement and can be molded into any shape or size. They are unique planting containers that are porous and a great environment for plant growth. In this workshop, participants will create their own hypertufa from peat moss, Portland cement and perlite. This is a messy workshop and organizers ask participants to wear appropriate clothing.  Participants must also bring one container to mold their hypertufa, no larger than 12 inches by 16 inches. All other materials to make the planter will be provided. Workshop pricing for the general public is $30 and $25 for Botanical Gardens’ members.

The Fresh Thanksgiving Arrangement Workshop returns this fall.  Two identical sessions will be offered on November 19 and 20 from 6-8pm.  In this floral design workshop, participants will create a beautiful autumnal arrangement for their Thanksgiving get-together.  Organizers ask that participants bring hand clippers, a pair of scissors and a large box to transport the arrangement. The cost for this workshop will be $40 for the general public and $35 for Botanical Gardens’ members. The Botanical Gardens will be closed November 19-22 to create some holiday magic, so this class will be held in the Administration Building next to the Botanical Gardens on November 19 and 20.

Space is limited for all three workshops and pre-registration is required.  Go to www.buffalogardens.com or call 716.827.1584 ext. 730 for more information and to register.
